Because I continue to be distracted ...

Jenny's Interview from May Anderton on Vimeo.

I love running, if only because it properly tires me out. And folks, I'm properly tired out. But I really enjoy hearing this librarian talk about her favorite books from childhood. Yeah.

These are a few photos I took while waiting for Jenny to deplane. She broke the jetway, and no one could get off. She was stuck in the rear of the plane for twenty minutes, and I was about to open a can on LaGuardia. You know my relationship with that place.

These are from the Macy's Flower show. The place smelled fantastic, and no one was trying to spray us with perfume.

I love spending time with people who are really passionate about stuff. Jenny is a librarian. She loves books. We spent part of Friday afternoon at Strand Bookstore.

This was probably one of the most delightful walks I've ever taken. It was a nice, easy stroll, and my calves are still a little tight from it. Thanks, Jenny. At least I got my very first Grimaldi's experience from it. Totally worth it.

It's extremely fun just to mosey. Okay, Brooklyn was a bit on the chilly side, but Central park warmed up quite nicely.

Before Jenny took off Monday afternoon, we headed up to Grant's Tomb to make sure someone was buried there. I would hate to get that ridiculous question wrong. It was a rainy day, and we walked about a half-mile in the rain to find a place for lunch. I had videotaped two interviews at our lunch table: one, where I asked her about the state of the economy, and two, where I asked her about when she first read the Anne of Green Gables series. And then I vowed to delete the videos. I haven't done that yet, but at least I haven't posted them on YouTube. She'd KILL me.

This past weekend was a lot of fun. It was relaxing, and I really enjoyed catching up and laughing with my good friend, Jenny. Is having this much fun legal? It has to be, even if the hangover wasn't chemically induced.

I still can't find OK Computer ...

This has been one whirlwind of a weekend. We wandered around Central Park yesterday.
Came back to the apartment and watched most of Fiddler on the Roof
Went to Junior's for sandwiches and cheesecake.
We have some time to hang out this morning, then we're back to our lives as usual.
I've had a really, really fun time.

It's not super cold today. It's supposed to reach the 60s by the end of this week.
And, it's supposed to rain a lot. Thanks a lot, spring.
You know what, though? The trees are blooming, and it's perfect.
Seriously.
Jenny and May

Y'all, Brooklyn is scratching her head, all confused. She has no idea that yesterday, a couple of women from Middleburg, Florida danced with her until she was dizzy. We covered a lot of ground yesterday. We saw a lot. Pictures at Flickr to come.

It's 28 degrees right now. Thanks a lot, weather.

My inner thighs are talking, but I cannot hear what they are saying.
That's probably because they're close enough now to be able to tell each other secrets.
I still don't weigh as much as I did that summer I worked at a bagel shop.
Oh-so-close to qualify to give blood.
This is how much I weighed last month in Austin.

Writing every day has been good exercise. I've been flipping through my archives, and some entries aren't more than a line or two long. Which is fine, but I didn't realize how much I went to this site at work until 1) work cut off all "personal and storage sites" and 2) I looked at all the quippy posts written during work. I can definitely stand behind writing on my own time.

When I was in college, certain words would pop into my head on my walk up to campus. Words with a fun rhythm, words that were related. One set of these words was interpolate/extrapolate. Many a morning I marched to the cadence of "interpolate, extrapolate" to a religion class or calculus or a chemistry or genetics class. Or to take a nap in the women's bathroom of the 5th floor of the library. It had couches.

I've been thinking about the evolution of language and how readily we accept some connotations as denotations. I certainly appreciate how flexible and inclusive of social/education status language has become. It's great to have so many options. As I was enjoying my "interpolate, extrapolate" memory, I thought about how connected those words are; they have the same root but opposite-meaning prefixes, and they both can refer to mathematics or the mental handling of information.

So I wondered, what other sets of words are this way?

Then a dimension in my world bent. Oh my gosh, how in the world did increment/excrement happen? At what point did something go really, really wrong? I don't know about you, but my mind goes in completely different directions when I hear these two words. I tried looking up archaic meanings, but it seems excrement has always meant ... "excrement."  Processes can increase or improve in increments, but it's hard not to associate a certain other process with excrement.

What about you?

Jenny and I are going to explore Brooklyn today. Then we'll hightail it up to Harlem. We stayed up until 2:30 this morning. And now? You can see what time it is now.

So far ...

Jenny and May
Jenny and I went to Macy's for the flower show. Really cool. A lot cooler than I remember it.
We had lunch down in the cellar.
We went to a bookstore for a NYC guidebook.
We went down to Union Square.
Combed through Strand Bookstore.
Walked through Union Square.
Walked back up to the apartment.
Supposedly, this took all afternoon.

We have the evening before us.

A Couple More Pics

  • Nov. 16th, 2006 at 6:02 PM

So, these were taken on the last day Jenny was in NYC:

The first one is in Central Park. Jenny was taking a picture of some tall rock, and this is me waiting for her.

The second one is while Jenny was on the subway on her way home. I chased the train and made a face at her.

She takes great pictures.

I am so caffeinated right now. My cold medicine is wearing off, but boy, am I wired. I got a messload of work done today, and if I let myself, I could have done some more. But, I'm hanging with friends tonight, and work waits for me tomorrow.

Of course we talked about nearly everything. We people-watched. I wasn't the best hostess or tour guide. And of course, we didn't get to see everything or eat everything in those 3.5 days. Next time, we'll cover a little bit more.

Thanks for visiting. I hope you had a great time.

A Big Highlight

Jenny and May
So. Last day of Jenny's visit. We're at brunch at a pretty popular restaurant. I have the Eggs Benedict; Jenny has home fries, bacon, and toast.

Jenny appears to be reviewing pictures on her digital camera. I bust out my camera as well.
I take a picture of Jenny. Candid shot, of course, and it's pretty funny to me:

This obviously cracks me up. Little did I know at the time that Jenny was videotaping me taking funny pictures of her. Jenny is sneaky. Do not let her fool you. Jenny is laughing hysterically. Tears are coming to Jenny's eyes at the time, and I think she's laughing at the picture I took of her! (Warning: Please go pee before watching this video.)

Brunch is very New York, but the laughing? That's all us.

I had a wonderful time with Jenny this past weekend. Lots of fun, lots of laughing, lots of quality time together. Pictures and video and commentary to follow. She arrived in Jax at 3:30 this morning. LaGuardia did not disappoint with her delays. So sorry about that...
